These three articles comprise in a nutshell the complexity of life at the turn of the 20th century for women as well as the deep stirring for continuing a society with “traditional values” in a time of change. These articles show the remarkable advances in the study of women in America as a focus apart from the patriarchal overviews of American life: they dig deeply into the personal and political experience of women in urban life–and America was moving from an agricultural to an urban economy at a great pace in these years, fueled by international connections through war and migration. If nothing else, they show that on the individual level, the social historical level, life was more in change and complexity–and the newer analyses we have now based on seeing the racial, ethnic, class, educational, and gender issues as the bases of scholarly analysis.
